Get Clinical on Day One

While many medical professionals in the civilian sector face the burden of building a practice upon graduation, in Navy Medicine, you have an established patient population from day one. Military members and their families immediately rely on you to be their medical support system, no matter your specialty. You'll be exposed to a wide variety of cases early on in your career, with experience in both routine and complex care. This includes the opportunity to work with patients in various settings — in a hospital, on a ship, in a clinic or even out in the field. You aren’t limited to a single location throughout your career; you can adjust what you do with the needs of the Navy. With the chance to work on a variety of caseloads, you’ll also see clear pathways to career advancement within your field. Your main focus will be on patient care, rather than the other business challenges that come with running a practice. In the Navy, things like overhead costs, malpractice insurance, support staff and billing paperwork are all managed by the Department of Defense, letting you stay focused on what matters.

Guaranteed Post-Graduation Position

Your position in Navy Medicine is guaranteed when you join, even if you’re still finishing school. You’ll be matched with a competitive salary, housing stipend, and unmatched health and retirement benefits so you can feel comfortable immediately upon graduation.

Talk to a Recruiter if you have questions about the placement process. Depending on your specialty or your field, you’ll be assigned to a specific location or be trained according to that specialty’s process.

With over 95 Navy hospitals and hundreds of ships and treatment facilities, you’ll be placed in a location that fits best with the Navy’s needs at the time. Most medical staff are placed at the Navy’s major medical centers, including places like Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Naval Medical Center San Diego and Naval Hospital Jacksonville.

Your practice environment can vary throughout your career. Places you may serve include:

  • Shore-based facilities
  • Military treatment facilities
  • Research centers
  • Training facilities
  • Operational settings
  • Aircraft carriers
  • Submarines
  • Marine Corps units
  • Fleet surgical teams
  • Humanitarian missions
  • Disaster relief
  • Global health initiatives

If you’re specializing in medical research, the Navy has some of the top research facilities in the world. You might find yourself at the Naval Medical Research Command in Maryland or even at one of our research laboratories worldwide.

The Navy’s structure provides a unique opportunity for mentorship from those with years of hands-on experience. The Naval Medical Leader & Professional Development Program (NMLPDP) provides continuous leadership opportunities for Navy medical professionals at civilian higher learning facilities.

  • Aerospace medicine
  • Infectious diseases
  • Trauma/combat casualty care
  • Undersea medicine

Clinical Training

We make sure that you receive your continuing medical education through the Navy Medical Leader & Professional Development Command. There is also the opportunity to receive enhanced training in your specialty while even adding new ones. Many Navy medical professionals are experts in a wide variety of fields — for example, you could practice family medicine while also earning your certifications in general surgery and beyond. We know that continuing education is at the forefront of keeping our medical team prepared for anything, and that’s why we offer best-in-class professional development programs.
