Navy MSC Education & Financial Assistance
Officers in the Navy Medical Service Corps have the opportunity to further their education and receive advanced graduate degrees in programs that support their career development through the Naval Postgraduate School. This is especially applicable to Officers with a focus in health care administration and management roles. While not a medical school, NPS provides graduate-level education to help our Officers advance in their administrative and leadership positions. Find out more about the Naval Postgraduate School.

The Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP) provides an incentive to new accessions to enter the Navy, and current active-duty medical personnel to extend their active-duty commitment through the payment of professional educational loans. The maximum yearly loan repayment is $40,000, minus ~22% federal income taxes, which are taken out prior to lender repayment. Your Service Matters
Disaster Relief
Officers in the Medical Service Corps not only serve our Sailors and families, but also are there to assist in emergencies and times of need around the world. Floods, earthquakes, fires and disease outbreaks are inevitable parts of life, and it’s often up to our Navy to respond in times of crisis. You’ll be part of regularly occurring training missions to ensure we’re prepared for anything, while also coordinating with a variety of other federal agencies to ensure logistics go smoothly.
Humanitarian Missions
The Navy is more than the world’s most elite fighting force. We also provide humanitarian aid to those who need it most. Our hospital ships, the USNS Mercy and the USNS Comfort, are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice and can provide full-service medical care in any environment. Operations are continuously underway to provide people with the care they need in any situation that might arise. There are opportunities within the Navy’s Office of Global Health Engagement to support key initiatives with partner nations in ensuring that we’re improving the lives of their citizens and our own.
Practice Capabilities & Locations
You’ll have the chance to practice at one of our many stateside, international or ship-based facilities. Depending on your specialty, you’ll be assigned per the needs of the Navy and where your command is based. With over 95 Navy hospitals and hundreds of ships and treatment facilities, you’ll be placed in a location that fits best with the Navy’s needs at the time. Most medical staff are placed at the Navy’s major medical centers, including places like Walter Reed National Military Hospital in Washington, D.C., Naval Medical Center San Diego and Naval Hospital Jacksonville. You may also serve aboard one of our hospital ships or on an aircraft carrier, amphibious ship or submarine.
Combat Operations Support
In some cases, you may have the opportunity to deploy with one of the Navy’s or Marines’ combat operational teams or forward-deployed medical units. Here, you’ll specialize in trauma care, emergency medicine, combat casualty care and operational medicine support. This is only applicable to certain specialties, but our expeditionary units serve around the world, caring for Sailors and Marines who are serving their nation.
